After most bells were taken down from the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower Wednesday, a pair of Verdin Company employees stayed at the top to begin the job of enhancing the structure to provide hangers for additional bells.
Consider the existing support structure as a “Y”, with bells hanging from each piece and where they intersect. The additional structure adds a row of hangers set vertically from the end of each piece and cross pieces around the perimeter of the “Y.”
Much progress was made before rain Thursday morning slowed the project.
Passers-by will see workers at the top of the tower over the next two weeks. Welders, electricians and painters will all have their turns, according to county engineer Wade Weiss.
Verdin Company is serving as general contractor for the project, with the Greene County engineer’s office serving as contract administrator. The Bell Tower Community Foundation “owns” the improvement/enhancement portion of the project, while Greene County is responsible for maintenance of the tower.
